The World Golf Championships (WGC) was set up in 1999 and consisted of three golf championships which counted for the Order of Merit of the European Tour and the Japan Golf Tour, and approved by theAsian Tour, the Australasian Tour and the Sunshine Tour.

The Bridgestone already existed since 1976 and belonged to the former ' World Series of Golf '. From 2000-2006 World Cup also belonged at the WGC, since then it remains recognized by the International Federation of PGA Tours.

In 2009, the HSBC tournament, which existed since 2005, added as the fourth tournament of the WGC series. The tournament counted in 2009 (yet) count towards the ranking of the American PGA Tour. Was the winner of the HSB'S invited by the American Tour for the SBS Championship, the first tournament of the season, where all the winners from the previous season are invited.

The Organization of these four tournaments is in the hands of the International Federation of PGA Tours.

Goal[Edit]Edit

WGC was founded to top players of the different Tours to play with each other more frequently, and not just during the Majors. That is demonstrated by the high quality tournaments players field and out of the points that the winner for the Werelsranking get. Winners of a Major get 100 points, for winning a WGC tournament between 70 and 78. Only the winner of the Players Championship gets more, i.e. 80 points.

Criticism[Edit]Edit

The reason that the four WGC tournaments are played frequently in the United States is that the prize money there is higher than outside the continent. However, this had a lot of criticism, especially the media because it is a ' World Championship ' is, and therefore should be played outside the United States regularly.
