Robert Ervin Howard (Peaster (Texas), 22 January 1906 - Cross Plains (Texas), 11 June 1936) was an American writer of Adventurefantasy and pulp stories. His most famous works are the books series about Conan the barbarianSolomon Kane and Red Sonja. Howard wrote mainly short stories peppered with action, magic and sword fights. An often recurring element in his work is to overcome problems by force and power.

Birth and death[Edit]Edit

Howard was born in Peaster, Texas , the son of Dr. Isaac Mordecai Howard and Hester Jane Ervin Howard. The Howard family has lived in several places in Texas, after which they established in 1919 in Cross Plains, Texas. Howard wrote in some of his letters that he was in the small oil-and frontier towns of the West met the hard side of life.

Howard began writing fiction when he was 15. His first story Spear and Fang was published in Weird Tales, a known pulp and fantasy magazine. He became one of Weird Tales ' most famous writers, and in 1926 was mentioned for the first time Howard on the front. When he started to publish his works, he came into contact with other writers such as H. P. Lovecraft andClark Ashton Smith, with whom he corresponded.

On June 11, 1936, to about eight o'clock in the morning, Howard committed suicide. His mother, who suffered to tuberculosis , was in a coma ended up where they probably wouldn't come out. He went in his car seat with a borrowed Colt automatic .38 and shot himself in the head. He became unconscious and died eight hours later. His mother died the next day. They were buried at the same time on 14 June on Greenleaf Cemetery in Brownwood.

Books, movies and poems[Edit]Edit

Robert Howard wrote different genres of stories, primarily fantasy and historical fiction. His most famous creation, Conan the Barbarian (Conan the barbarian), who first appeared in the story The Phoenix on the Sword in december 1932. Conan is a character that power and violence used to get his way and in the different stories we see Conan as a warrior or pirate that eventually Aquilonië 's King. Other stories are those of Kull the Conqueror, a Atlantiër from an earlier age of barbarians, Red Sonja, a medieval freedom fighter star, and Solomon Kane, a Puritan swordsman.

Howard's prose can be described as straightforward, colorful and exciting. His stories are meant to entertain, fast tempo and the element of action comes in his stories clearly. In his world is violence is often the only and best solution to get things done. The Victor always ends with money and women. Howard rarely think in terms of good and bad, something one can find back in the Norwegian mythology.

In 1996 the film The Whole Wide World. The film is about the life of Novalyne Price and her friendship with Robert e. Howard. There are several films based on Howard's stories, the best known are Conan the BarbarianConan the DestroyerRed Sonja and Kull the Conqueror.
