History[Edit]Edit

Born to WWII[Edit]Edit

The club was founded in 1880 as St. Marks (West Gorton). In 1887 , the club moved to the new stadium in Ardwick, Hyde Road in the East of Manchester and was renamed Ardwick AFC. In 1891/92 joined the Football Alliance, the counterpart of the Football League. The following season was absorbed by the Football League and the Football Alliance was the second division (Second Division). By financial problems came a reorganisation within the club in 1893/94 and the name was changed to Manchester City FC.

In 1896 , the club was runners-up behind Liverpool but could not be promoted. Three years later it was hit when the title was won. After three seasons the club was relegated and could promote back after one season. The club was runners-up behind the re-entry at Sheffield Wednesday , beating Bolton Wanderers 1-0 in the Crystal Palace Stadium in the final of the FA Cup. The club took out some good results but relegated again in 1909. Now the club could also return after one season and took out mediocre results until the League was shut down by the first world war, in the last season, the club was fifth.

After the war, the club at the same elan further and took out good results, in 1921 became the second place, behind Burnley. A year earlier the main stand was destroyed by fire in 1923 and the club moved to the new stadium Maine Road. After the good listing went downhill until a new relegation followed in 1926. This time it lasted two seasons before City rejoined the elite add could. In 1933 the club again reached the final of the FA Cup but lost to Everton, a year later it was called touch when Portsmouth FC was defeated.

In 1936/37 was the club champion with three points ahead of Charlton Athletic. The success, however, was not renewed and there followed even an anti climax to downgrade and that by the next season while the club scored 80 times, most in the whole Division!

The club finished In the second division in the subtop, in early 1939 the League was shut down by the outbreak of the Second World War.

Postwar period and golden age[Edit]Edit

After the war, the club brought in the Second Division Champion immediately rejoined the elite. After two seasons in the top ten the club relegated again in 1950. After one season returned several seasons back and fought against relegation to City 1954/55 when the club won the FA Cup and seventh was against Birmingham City. This FA final is that the club won 3-1 is one of the most famous in history because Manchester goalkeeper Bert Trautmann broke a neck vertebra 15 minutes before the end after a collision and just continue played without knowing what was going on. The following year the club fourth in the League, the following seasons the club was a few weeks later with the occasional outlier. In 1963 the club was relegated again and could not even in the second division with the top at the first two seasons, the spectators let it also failed and in January 1965 it came record low turn up, 8015 against Swindon Town. The third season in the Second Division was hit and the club again, this time for a successful era.

After a quiet season did the club all the way to the title in 1967/68 along with defending champion and city rival Manchester United. City won the title with two points ahead of United and disqualified for the first European play. However, the Turkish Fenerbahçe SK made a brief adventure of. Also in the League ran not easy and the club was only thirteenth, although that was a lot better than the last time when they were champion. Consolation prize that year was a new FA Cup win and a new European adventure. BilbaoLierseAcadémica and Schalke were successively put aside and in the final of the UEFA Cup winners ' Cup won City of the Polish Górnik Zabrze. So was the second City in 1969 team that won a national and international Cup in the same season. The following year the club in the semi-finals defeated by Chelsea In 1974 if the club on the final day of the season to give the final blow to arch rivals Manchester United by, of all things, a goal by former player Denis Law with 1-0 win, making relegation for United followed.

Dark years[Edit]Edit

The 1980s ushered in a less good period in the club relegated in 1983 , and played two years in second division and then again two years in first division and then to degrade and to play two years in the second division. The 1990s started better with a fifth place in 1991 and 1992 under the leadership of coach Peter Reid. After he left it went also worse with City. In 1992 , the club was a founding member of the Premier League which replaced the First Division as the highest class. The club played there until 1996 when a new relegation followed.

Two seasons later was a low point in the history of the club is, Manchester City relegated to the third Division (Second Division).
