Lady Margaret Nathalie (Maggie) Smith (Illford (Essex), december 28, 1934) is a British actress.

A few years after her birth, her family moved with father Nathaniel, mother Margaret Hutton-Little and older brothers Ian and Alistair, to Oxford, where Maggie also would go to school. After a few successful high school Maggie at the age of 16 went to Oxford Play School, where her career began for good.

During her long career, she has already many important and acclaimed roles. The most recent is her role as Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Pottermovies, a role she continued to play even in difficult times because they wanted to stay until the end of the film series. She also plays the Oscar-winning star in "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" (1969). Since 2010, she appeared in the tv series Downton Abbey.

In 1967 married Maggie with the well-known actor Robert Stephens, with whom she in 1967 and 1969 got two sons, Toby Stephensand Chris Larkin , who in the meantime both in the footsteps of their parents have entered into force. Maggie divorced In 1974 by Robert, and remarried in 1975 with her childhood sweetheart, the playwrightBeverly Cross, with whom she remained married until his death in 1998.

In 2008 was at Maggie breast cancer found. She is now cured.

  • In 1972 was Maggie Knight of the order of the British Empire, in 1990 , she was promoted to Knight Commander in the same order and became thereby officially Dame Maggie Smith.
  • Maggie Smith got so far two Oscars, one for her starring role in "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" in 1969 and one for her supporting role in "California Suite" in 1978.
  • In 1968 she received the BAFTA Award as best actress for "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie", they won this award for the second time in 1984 for "A Private Function". A third time, she received the BAFTA Award for best actress two years later, in 1986, for "A Room with A View", a fourth time in 1988 for "The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne". In 1999, she won her first BAFTA Award, and a fifth as best actress in a supporting role for "Tea with Mussolini". Her first nomination for a BAFTA dates back to 1958, as best debut of an actress in "Nowhere To Go".
  • Her first nomination for an Emmy Award she received in 1993 for "Suddenly Last Summer", in 2000 followed a nomination for "David Copperfield". In 2003, she was a first time winner of an Emmy for "My House in Umbria". In 2010, she received a nomination for her role in "Capturing Mary", in 2011 and 2012 followed her second and third Emmy Award, this time for two consecutive years, "Downton Abbey". In 2013, she was once again nominated for the same role by the way.
  • On the 18th Screen Actors Guild Awards , she received an individual nomination for Downton Abbey, a year later she received as part of the best Cast in a Drama Series Award at the 19th Screen Actors Guild Awards.
  • At the Satellite Awards , she received an Award in 2002 for her role in "Gosfork Park", in 2004 a nomination for "My House in Umbria", in 2011 a nomination for "Downton Abbey", in 2012, she won her second Satellite Award with the same role.
  • In 1966, she received her first nomination for a Golden Globe, for her role in "Othello", back in 2012 a nomination for "Downton Abbey", in 2013, she was at the 70th Golden Globe Awards listed twice, once with a third nomination, this time for her role in "Quartet", and once with her fourth nomination and her first Golden Globe Award where they had to wait until 2013 for "Downton Abbey"
