She was born in Houston, Texas, the daughter of Barbara Wayne Kirkland and Marion Clay Chiles-, which is the brother of Eddie Chiles, oil Tycoon and owner of the Texas Rangers. She grew up in Alice. Chiles was educated at the University of Texas at Austin and the former Finch College in New York City, where she was discovered by an editor of the fashion magazine Glamour. Who was looking for a young woman who could adorn on the cover of the college number.  she took the offer and soon got signed to Wilhelmina Models.
In the beginning of the 70 's Chiles enjoyed a successful modeling career. In 1972 she made her film debut in Together For Days, followed by The Way We Were from 1973: she with Robert Redford and Barbra Streisand as the college sweetheart of Redford's character. She was then cast as Jordan Baker in The Great Gatsby (1974), alongside Mia Farrow and, again, Robert Redford. In 1978, she appeared in the film version of a book by Agatha Christie Death on the Nile as the murder victim Linnet Ridgeway Doyle, and in 1979, she played Dr. Holly Goodhead Bond girl in the James Bond film Moonraker, next to Roger Moore as Bond; This is probably her most famous role she has had in her career. Although her was asked to play in the next Bond film, The Spy Who Loved Me, be they this offer off because they temporarily interrupted her acting career at that time.  she also had a small role in the thriller Coma (1978), one of the many films in which she played the victim of a murder. 
She lost her younger brother to non-hodgkin's lymphoma in 1978, what hair did decide to acting to interrupt for a period of three years, just at the time of her success. Her first major role was in the sixth season ofDallas in 1982-1983 where she played Holly Harwood .
Her film career, and it was hard to not quite recovered to roles that were similar to those of several years before, although her role as Reporter Jennifer Mack in Broadcast News (1986) was well received. After she was featured in the Disney film Wish Upon a Star (1996) and she played the role of a frightened cruise passenger in the poorly received film Speed 2: Cruise Control from 1997. In the same year, she had a cameo appearance in Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, although her scene in the American version of the film was removed.
Shortly after the death of her younger brother, with whom she had a special bond, they ended the long lasting relationship with Don Henley of The Eagles. Her father died in 1997 and in 2005, she was married for the first time, with broker on Wall Street and philanthropist Richard Gilder.
