Evangelista was raised in a Catholic Italian emigrants family. At a young age she had the ambition to become a model. Her breakthrough came in 1978 when she competed in the ' Miss Teen Niagara Contest ' and was scouted by a modeling agency. At that time she was fifteen years. Between 1987 and 1993 she was married to Elite-boss Gerald Marie. In 2003, she received a star on Canada's Walk of Fame. Evangelista had a relationship with Andre Rau, footballer Fabien Barthez and actor Kyle MacLachlan. She's been engaged with restaurateur Peter Morton.
On 11 October 2006, she was in New York a son, after previously having had a miscarriage.  It remained for a long time unknown who the father was. In July 2011, however, it was known that François-Henri Pinault, the husband of actress Salma Hayek, the father is.
