Kathy Whitworth (MonahansTexasseptember 27, 1939) is an American golf star who won between 1962 and 1985 88 tournaments on the u.s. LPGA Tour, including six majors. In 1981 she was the first woman who had earned a million dollars on the LPGA Tour.

Amateur[Edit]Edit

Whitworth only started with golf when she was fifteen years. Three years later, she won the New Mexico Amateur Championships and a year later again (1957 and 1958). She then became professional.

Professional[Edit]Edit

Whitworth was immediately in 1958 member of the American Ladies Tour (LPGA Tour) and was Player of the Yearseven times. She also won seven times the Vardon Trophy awarded annually to the player with the lowest average score. She is added to the World Golf Hall of Fame.

She won some tournaments several times:

  • 5 x St Petersburg Open (later Orange Blossom Classic): 1965, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1975
  • 2 x San Antonio Civitan Open: 1963, 1974
  • 2 x Lady Carling Open (Maryland): 1966, 1968
  • 2 x Raleigh Golf Classic: 1971, 1972
  • 2 x Portland Ladies Open: 1972, 1973
  • 2 x Southgate Ladies Open; 1972, 1973
  • 2 x Alamo Ladies Open: 1967, 1972

In 1990 she was the captain of the u.s. team that played the first Solheim Cup , which was won over by the Americans.
