Hoagland Howard "Hoagy" Carmichael ( Bloomington (Indiana) , November 22 1899 - Rancho Mirage (California), December 27 1981 ) was an American composer , pianist, singer, actor and band leader.

Career  Edit

Carmichael especially gained fame with his compositions Stardust , Georgia On My Mind , The Nearness of You and Heart and Soul , four of the most recorded American songs of all time. He also played in fourteen films. During World War II, he wrote a lot of songs to entertain US soldiers, such as Cranky Old Yank, Eager Beaver and No More Toujours l'Amour. In 1988 he was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame .
