Der Himmel über Berlin, also known as the international title, Wings of Desire is a 1987 film by German Director Wim Wenders.

The film gave Wenders several international awards, including Best Director at the Cannes Film festival and the European Film Awards.


Damiel (Bruno Ganz) and Cassiel (Otto Sander) are angels who wander through Berlin for centuries. Invisible to ordinary mortals, they observe Berliners and they listen to their musings. Where necessary they relieve the pain of sad, lonely or fretting that the people, without even noticing it. Gradually the urge arises when Damiel to experience the earthly existence of human beings. If he then falls in love with touches on the trapeze artist Marion (Solveig Dommartin), his decision to a mortal person.

Wim Wenders made In 1993 a sequel to this film with the title In weiter Ferne, so nah! In 1998 City of Angels appeared, a Hollywood movie based on Der Himmel über Berlin.


Wenders carried this film on to his film heroes Yasujirō OzuFrançois Truffaut and Andrei Tarkovsky.
