Angela Brigid Lansbury (LondonOctober 16, 1925) is a British actress of American descent.

Lansbury is the daughter of the actress Moyna MacGill born in Belfast and the granddaughter of the labour politician George Lansbury. Her father, Edgar Lansbury, died in 1934 when Angela was 9 years old. When she was 14 years old started the Second World War and they emigrated with her mother to the United States where she wasnaturalized until 1951 American.

As a young actress in Los Angeles she earned with work in a Department store.

Lansbury was briefly married (1945-1946) with the 15 years older American actor Richard Cromwell. In 1948 she married businessman Peter Shaw of Irish descent, a former friend of actress Joan Crawford. Shaw has played a large role as manager of her career. Their marriage lasted until the death of Shaw in 2003.

Lansbury has a son, Antony (formerly producer of Murder, She Wrote), a daughter, Deirdre, and a stepson David Shaw, Angela Battarrais.

She lives in BrentwoodCalifornia. During holidays, she goes to her home in County CorkIreland.

Lansbury underwent a knee replacement surgery In June 2005.

Lansbury made her film debut, for which she received an Oscar nomination , in 1944 as the Minx in the film Gaslight with Ingrid Bergman and Charles Boyer. This was immediately followed by yet another Oscar nomination for her role as Sibyl Vane in a film adaptation of the picture of Dorian Gray (' The Picture of Dorian Gray ', 1945) by Oscar Wilde. Many movies followed in a long and varied career.

Lansbury played in The Manchurian candidate (1962) the chilly, ruthless mother of a veteran who is brainwashed by Communists a killer. They got a lot of praise for her chills causing occur, resulting in a third Oscar nomination. In the movie her son was played by Laurence Harvey who only three years younger than Lansbury. Himself said in an interview with CNN that Lansbury this evil character in ' The Manchurian candidate ' was her favorite role.

She played Miss Marple in The Mirror crack'd (1980) from the novel by Agatha Christie. They then went on a voice mail system when it's animated films such as The Last Unicorn (1982), the singing teapot in beauty and the beast (Disney, 1991) and Anastasia (1997).

Lansbury had success on Broadway with musicals , among other things, Anyone Can WhistleMame (1966), Dear World (1969) and Gypsy (1974).She also played Mrs. Lovett in Stephen Sondheim's famous musicalSweeney Todd. For these musicals, she received a Tony Award.

Her greatest fame got Lansbury as Jessica Fletcher in the science-fiction TV series Murder, She Wrote (1984-1996). This series is one of the longest-running detective novels in the American television crime dramas.Lansbury was one of the highest paid actresses and earned her the record as the actress with the most nominations (12) without an Emmy win.

Lansbury stands out for its bright, fixed style of acting. Her facial expressions, reactions and gestures are very deliberately and focused. The series Murder, She Wrote , shows many similarities with another long-running series Diagnosis Murder  in which Dick Van Dyke played the lead role. Both series are built around a well-known, older actor and serve as workshops for prospective directors and script writers.

Early 1990s got Lansbury by Queen Elizabeth II the ' Order ' of the British Empire (CBE). In 1995 she was 'Disney Legend'. The Screen Actors Guild actors Trade Union gave her a ' Lifetime Achievement Award ' in 1997 and in the same year she received the National Medal of Arts, the highest award that an American artist can get. In 2000 received the Kennedy Center Honors Lansbury.
